The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) is dedicated to raising public awareness about the Canadian Prairie's endangered species, specifically the Burrowing Owl and its habitat.

SBOIC opened its gates to the public for the first time in the spring of 1997. Located on the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds, the site was initially chosen because several pairs of wild burrowing owls nested in the infield of the adjacent field (an abandoned racetrack!).

In the beginning, SBOIC consisted of a small interpretive centre that showcased pictures and displays, and was staffed by a single person.  Visitors could use spotting scopes from an observation blind to view the wild owls nesting in the infield of the racetrack.

Today SBOIC is home to 3 imprinted burrowing owls, 6 wild non-releasable burrowing owls, and 1 short eared owl.

COME TAKE A LOOK!

In the summer months, SBOIC's focus is on in-house tours of our facility. Emphasis is on learning about the prairie ecosystem, and the conservation of species and habitat. Bring a whole class or bring your family. Our interpretive staff give guided tours and pass along information about research and conservation efforts being made by SBOIC and our partners.

A visit to the Centre includes:

•a chance to meet one of our ambassador owls;

•the opportunity to view SBOIC's captive owls in their outdoor aviaries;

•the chance to see wild hawks, coyotes, jackrabbits, gophers, and other prairie wildlife in the adjacent field;

•the opportunity to learn more about native prairie plants in the Evergreen Native Prairie Garden;
