Rodeo History

Rodeo is no longer a sport confined to people who live on ranches and lead a rural lifestyle. It is now open to be enjoyed by anyone with a competitive spirit and love of excitement.

The word "rodeo" was borrowed from the Spanish cowboys (vaqueros) and is a form of the verb 'rodear', which means 'to surround or round-up'. The word was used to describe the act of gathering cattle before a cattle drive, but was borrowed to describe cowboy competitions in the wild-west days of the late 1800's.

Started as a single rodeo in 1979, today we've grown into two rodeos with five standard competitions. From calf roping to bull riding, saddle bronc and barrel racing, the rodeo is filled with exhilaration and delights for everyone from the professional to the urban cowboy.

2008 Spring Rodeo

The Moose Jaw Exhibition Company Rodeo Committee would like to thank everyone involved in the 2007 Hometown Rodeo. This year’s CCA event features competitions in bareback, tie down roping, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing, team roping and bull riding. This year’s High School Rodeo competition will help to prepare the next generation of rodeo competitors for the move to the professional arena.
